In 2007 Lakes Health Services embarked on an innovative refurbishment and development programme which included a new three storey inpatient building.
The new building sits on the hill overlooking the Lake and is designed to maximise the view and provide a soft and soothing environment for patients, visitors and staff. It accommodates laboratory and pharmacy facilities, as well as an ambulatory care centre, a surgical orthopaedic ward, a CCU, an ICU and a medical ward. Strong traditional elements have been used in the design and timber, including carved panels, features from the moment one enters the building. The high pitched roof structure of the central atrium symbolises the traditional gabled roof of a Whare Nui and provides sky, light and air.
A master plan has been carefully carried out and allows for future development.
So often, it is the patient that never gets their needs heard during the design process. Bearing this in mind, we designed an uplifting project which has given patients in Rotorua the best possible environment – one which functions like a hospital but does not feel like a hospital.
