About this Project

The new 11 level tower which sits over the existing 2,300sqm plus floor plate, contains 149 quality residential penthouses and apartments, a new health centre, internal pool/spa and plant space. The upper residential levels incorporate a unique internal balcony design within a glazed façade that consists of a mix of double-hung sliding panels and fixed glazing.

Two new 'observation' passenger lifts with a separate entrance off Albert Street enable access to the new apartments, health centre and carparks. Two new floors of carparking and plant were constructed on the Mills Lane (East) side with vehicle access via two car lifts at street level including a roof garden above the existing podium designed by Ted Smythe. The Hotel occupies a full city block bounded by Albert and Swanson Streets and Mills Lane making the redeveloped building one of the largest in the city.

The Hotel closed down for six months in 2006 while structural work was undertaken to strengthen the existing building to enable it to take the additional floor loading. At the same time approximately 280 rooms were upgraded with new furnishings and services. In addition, lobby facilities, a new kitchen, restaurant and upgraded function rooms designed by Peddle Thorp, were constructed in the existing Hotel foyer.

Brad Luke
The Stamford Residences project required a very high level of attention to build sequencing and detailing; coordinating the building of 10 new floors on top of an operation hotel building, along with the design development and testing of bespoke façade systems.

Delivering this project within tight time constraints required innovative solutions, ably delivered by our highly skilled architectural and interiors team.
