About this Project

Work commenced in 2004 to enclose the existing open Courtyard within the South Crescent area of the historical Auckland War Memorial Museum.

A copper and glass wave dome roof above an open Atrium, encased by the existing facade, with a suspended kauri clad 'bowl' was constructed based on a concept design by Noel Lane. The work provided an additional 60% of exhibition space and public facilities, on-site storage and associated operational facilities for the Museum. There is a multi-functional Events Centre on the top floor and a 200-seat auditorium within the 'bowl'. An underground public car park and a separate loading dock and security area for the control of inwards and outwards goods are also included in this development.

In association with Noel Lane Architects and Salmond Reed, Heritage Architects.
