The extensive enabling works undertaking at the 85 Customs Street Residential site is all but complete. The preparation work includes second and third stage demolition works to existing buildings, in part, located to the east and west of the development site. The adjacent heritage building has been structurally stabilised and wrapped up in ‘cotton wool’ (so to speak) ready for earthworks to begin.
The central portion of the site is where the 5 level basement and 56 level tower is to be sited. The cleared site has been prepared with strengthening works to stabilise carriageways, below ground obstructions identified and removed and the construction of perimeter concrete guide walls complete as a requirement for the excavation and construction of basement permanent works.
With building consents in place the sub-contractor has established their presence by moving into position heavy machinery and setting up the bentonite recovery plant, all commissioned and ready to start in earnest. Reinforcing cages have been fabricated offsite and are expected to be placed in their 20m deep permanent positions and concrete poured within the next week.
This process will continue over the next few months until the continuous perimeter basement wall is complete, a significant milestone for the project.

Peddle Thorp are proud to be working with Ballantynes designing a new building for their Lichfield Street frontage in Christchurch.
The redevelopment replaces the two temporary buildings constructed following the loss of the Andersons and Stables buildings in the February 2011 earthquake; Ballantynes lost 2550 square meters of trading space and four levels of car parking.
The new building comprises of a basement, two floors of retail with offices and car parking above. The new retail space will link seamlessly with the existing, with a new café and deli at the base of a triple height glazed atrium. The building will be an exciting addition to the expanding and dynamic retail precinct of Christchurch and an integral part of the Ballantynes retail experience.
Work is due to commence on site in the coming weeks, with an anticipated opening date of early 2019.
